📖 What is an Internships or an Apprenticeships? (Show/Hide)

College used to be reserved for the wealthy. Internships and apprenticeships were how most of us got trained for a job, they provide a chance to get real on the job training and experience in your field of study. Similarly, apprenticeships often come with some kind of certification at the end that ratchets up your employability. So if college is not your jam, this section is about learning on the job. Many of these offerings are paid positions, but some are not, and some are all over the world. Best of all, if you’re not sure what your jam is, check out Pathways where you can get help exploring all the possibilities. Our local Peninsula College works with employers to offer programs that layer classroom education with employer needs, meaning that while you are in a job, there are opportunities to return to the classroom to gain advancement in your position.

What is the difference between an apprenticeship and an internship? The U.S. Department of Labor does not have an official definition of internship or externship. However, generally speaking, differences between internships and apprenticeships include:

Americorps is a federal agency that provides a pathway to employment opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve in fields such as restoration, disaster services, food security, and health. Most times, these opportunities are unpaid but they offer paid housing, work experience, and travel opportunities.


Cascade Community Connections

Description:
Job training opportunities and assistance for people with disabilities. They offer the high school transition service for those who are graduating high school and need support transitioning into the workforce. They start early offering activities and services that align with the students IEP and individuals beyond high school goals. The high school transition program can start as early as 16 and is offered until the age of 21.


Community Boat Project - Paid Internship

Description:
Applicants must be ages 18-25 years old. This internship focuses on developing leadership, craftsmanship, and seamanship skills. Folks have the opportunity to commit to 3, 6, or 9 months. Building projects include tiny homes, boats, painting murals, or any other eclectic project that comes their way.


Jefferson Land Trust Youth Corps - Paid Internship

Description:
This internship program runs from April 1st-15th, applications open March 8th and are due by March 24th. This is a paid internship that equates to $300 for five days of participation for teens at least 16 years or older. This internship is field-based and gives teens the opportunity to gain experience in restoration. This internship is entirely outdoors and can be physically demanding since it gives participants the opportunity to visit wild terrain.

NWMC Real World Readiness - Paid Internship

Description:
This internship is open to folks ages 13-24 and once they have completed the required 90hrs, they will receive $1,200 and multiple certifications such as first aid and CPR, food handlers cards, and the Washington Boaters card. The real world readiness program supports students in identifying maritime interests and pathways which helps connect them with maritime opportunities, all while teaching industry specific and durable life skills.


Woofing - Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms

Signing up to be a woofer, gives you the opportunity to travel around the world and live on organic farms. This is a work trade opportunity where you will engage with the farm, learn about sustainability, experience a new culture, meet new people, and receive free room and board during your stay. You get to choose where you go, how long you stay, and what farming skills you want to develop!

At the Nest on Thursdays 12-5pm. Pathways to success helps people 16-24 find jobs and apply for continuing education that best fits their needs. They can provide support with transportation, housing, and clothing. This program is geared towards people who want to explore careers paths that are of interest to them. Email Emily to set up an appointment at The Nest. If you are interested but not able to come into The Nest, Emily might be able to meet closer to where you are located.
